LPL 2026 Complete Guide: Everything About the Lanka Premier League’s Sixth Edition

Format, franchises, venues, schedule, prize money and broadcast details for LPL 2026 — the tournament returning after a year’s break, running from July 17 to August 8 in Sri Lanka.

Updated for the 2026 season · Organised by Sri Lanka Cricket

Overview

The Lanka Premier League returns for its sixth edition in 2026 after the 2025 season was called off to give Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) time to prepare venues ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup, which Sri Lanka co-hosted alongside India in February–March. With the World Cup out of the way, LPL 2026 runs from July 17 to August 8, with August 9 kept free as a reserve day for the final.

The tournament is organised by Sri Lanka Cricket in partnership with Innovative Production Group (IPG), which holds the commercial and event rights. Five franchises take part, featuring a mix of Sri Lankan internationals, emerging domestic talent, and overseas stars drawn from a player pool spanning more than 20 countries — see the full LPL 2026 squads for all five teams.

Two changes define this edition: the introduction of the Impact Player substitution rule, and a mandate requiring every playing XI to include at least one Under-23 player at all times — even after an Impact Player swap is used. The traditional player auction has also been replaced by a full player draft for the first time in the league’s history.

Tournament Format

LPL 2026 follows a double round-robin league stage, meaning each of the five teams plays every other side twice — once as the designated home team and once away — before the competition moves into playoffs.

  • League stage: 24 matches across 22 days, with each team playing 8 league games.
  • Playoffs: The top four teams on the points table advance to a Qualifier 1, Eliminator and Qualifier 2 structure, in the same style used by the IPL.
  • Final: August 8, with a reserve day on August 9 if needed.
New for 2026: The Impact Player rule debuts in LPL this season, and every team must field at least one Under-23 player in its XI throughout the match, including after any Impact substitution — a deliberate push to keep pathways open for young Sri Lankan talent. See how this format compares in our LPL vs IPL breakdown.

Teams

Five franchises contest LPL 2026, with Jaffna Kings entering as the dominant force in the league’s history, having won four of the five previous titles.
